Golf Course Overview
We are a relatively new club and course, having opened in July of 1996. We are on land that is deep rooted in links to the past. The Club is located at the headwaters of the tributary that empties at Fairfield Landing on the Piankatank River. Our home farm, “Fairfield”, joins the golf property to the east. To the southeast, along holes 12, 13 and 14, we are bordered by the land of Woodstock. This former plantation home which dates to early republican architecture was built in 1840. The plantation has Lancaster ties having been owned and sold in 1798 by George Brent and his wife, Sarah, to James Ball of Lancaster, the executor for the John Fauntleroy estate. The current owner is Margaret F. Beckwith, widow of Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, Abraham Lincoln’s great grandson and last blood heir. Beckwith’s Mother, Jessie Lincoln Johnson, purchased the property on 1906.
Bordering Fairfield and Fairfield Landing to the east is Scoggins Creek, headwaters starting at Lower Church, formerly referred to as the “Chapel of Ease”, dating to 1650.
It was the first parish church of Christchurch, pre-dating the mother church. The present building, built in 1714, with its simple but stately elegance is used today as a Methodist Church.
This region, once referred to as “a fertile crescent”, probably peaked in activity and prominence with the advent of the steamboat. “Fairfield Landing”, which can be seen from the 13th and 14th greens, was the landing point on the Middlesex side of the river from the present bridge to the mouth of Dragon Run. One can catch a glimpse of the past when standing on the 14th tee by visualizing the stocking barge leaving Fairfield Landing to meet the steamer “Piankatank” as it left Freeport heading back to Baltimore. The tranquility of that day, when the pace had its own charm inspired us to use the steamboat as the symbol of our project. It is hoped that a round of golf through such a natural setting and a casual meal might restore a little of the charm of another era.
